Show Racism the Red Card held their first club event in Flintshire with Airbus Broughton AFC from the Welsh Premier League.
The event at the Airfield Broughton was attended by school children from Ysgol Gymraeg Glanrafon, Ysgol Bryn Gwalia, Ysgol Merllyn (Bagillt) and Bryn Deva.
The Airbus Broughton AFC Manager and former Middlesbrough player Craig Harrison, Academy Director Lee Starkey, and the club’s Assistant Manager Andy Thomas all came along to answer the audience’s questions, with SRtRC Honorary Patron and former professional footballer Leroy Rosenior completing the panel, which was chaired by Jason Webber, Campaign Worker in Wales.
The children asked the panel questions on racism in football and in society and how to deal with racism if they or anyone experienced it. The panel gave excellent responses to the many questions provided by pupils, explaining the reasons why people are racist and what the children can do to stop it.
Craig Harrison spoke about issues he has faced being an English manager of a Welsh club and what he has done to deal with these issues, while Lee Starkey spoke about some incidents that occurred during academy games and during away games. Leroy Rosenior explained feelings he had experienced when receiving racism during his playing days and gave advice to the children on what to do if racism occurred in school or in football.
Some of the points made by the panel included why minority groups receive racism in sport and society, and why it is important to report any racist incidents that occur in school and in society.
After the DVD and the Q & A session, the Airbus Broughton AFC Manager gave out prizes to the pupils that asked the best questions to the panel. These included an MP3 player and model planes from Airbus, and the best question asked during the event earned a free season ticket for the pupil and their parent for the 2009-10 season. The event was a huge success with the children leaving with positive messages and having enjoyed the occasion.
SRtRC would like to thank the staff and children of Ysgol Gymraeg Glanrafon, Ysgol Bryn Gwalia, Bagillt, Ysgol Merllyn, Bryn Deva Schools as well as everyone at Airbus Broughton AFC.
