Show Racism the RED Card held their first event at Newport County at Newport Stadium as the campaign focussed its attention to the South East Wales region during this week.
With the event held in the Clubs Bar Amber within the stadium, it was a great setting for children from Lliswerry Junior School, Caerleon Junior School, Eveswell primary, Maplas court primary and Somerton Primary School children Who had a tour of the stadium prior to the event directed by Newport County’s longest serving member of the County backroom team Tony Gilbert.
The event also saw the launch of the new anti-racism poster with Newport County, which will be sent to young children throughout Newport in the coming months.
The Panel consisted of ex Wimbledon and Bolton Wanderers player and current Newport county manager Dean Holdsworth, ex Swansea city, Birmingham City, Cardiff City and current Newport county player / coach Steve Jenkins, honorary SRTRC patron and ex West Ham United, QPR and Bristol City player Leroy Rosenior, welsh football trust Blaenau Gwent / Newport County football development officer James Rowberry and John Holmstrom From Union completed the panel.
After being shown the DVD, a Question and Answer session followed with great questions being put to the panel, these included questions about racism in football and if any of the players or manager had experienced it, the panel talked about incidents of racism that have taken place over the past few seasons involving Newport County players, they also explaining to the children the reasons why such behaviour is wrong and what the children can do to stop it. Dean Holdsworth also spoke of his experiences at Wimbledon and Bolton, along with an incident that occurred while playing Real Madrid in Spain.
SRTRC Patron Leroy Rosenior took a difficult task of choosing the best question and the winner received a signed ball from the club with 2 runners up getting goody bags.
The event was a huge success with the children leaving with positive messages and having enjoyed the occasion at Newport County FC
SRTRC would like to thank Jo Hubbard from Newport County FC, Lisa Savage from Newport CBC and the panel for their participation; we would also like to thank all the schools for their involvement.
