Around 50 young people from local Stockport schools were treated to a unique day out at Stockport County FC that included both a Show Racism the Red Card education event and the opportunity to see behind the scenes at a professional football club.
The guests arrived at the Manors Farm Training Ground at 11:00 and saw the squad put through their paces before having some lunch provided by the club and getting autographs from nearly all of the squad. At 13:00 the young people gathered to watch an exclusive preview of the new SRtRC film and get ready to take part in a Q&A session with Stockport County players Gareth Owen (Captain), Matt McNeil and Gary Dicker, also on the panel were SRtRC patrons Leroy Rosenior, Earl Barrett and Gary Bennett.
Project Coordinator, Ged Grebby introduced the new film, which was well received by the audience. The Q&A yielded some excellent questions from the audience and the players and patrons gave some thought provoking and useful answers. SCFC had provided match tickets for the panel’s favourite question of the day and SRtRC had also brought some T-Shirts, which were signed by the members of the panel for the best questions. The winners were Jack, Natalie and Connor and their questions were:
- Is racism quite common?
- Would you help stop racism or walk away?
- Which Country and culture most often experiences racism?
Local radio station Pure FM covered the event and interviewed Ged and representatives from the club and panel. On departure the club provided goody bags, which included a Stockport County FC scarf and souvenir programme from pre-season games against Liverpool and Manchester City. The event was the second that we had organised in conjunction with Stockport County FC and the club are keen to highlight the role that black footballers have had in the history of the club. As part of their 125th Anniversary celebrations the club have arranged an interactive exhibition on the history of black footballers at Stockport County FC, which will be open to the public at Staircase House in the Market Place of Stockport for 6 months.
SRtRC would like to thank Stockport County FC for hosting a really good event and particularly Jacci Cooper for all her help in organising the event. It was great of the club to welcome the group to the training ground and make the day a really memorable one for all concerned. Our thanks to all of the young people, players and patrons for attending and taking part.
